The standout feature of Valheim’s latest update is, without a doubt, the all-new Frost Caves dungeon biome, which opens up a wealth of new options for both veteran players and newbies alike. There’s much more to the update than just a new dungeon biome, however, and players who haven’t had the chance to play the game’s public test branch have much to look forward to.

Located in the game’s Mountains biome, the Frost Caves are a new dungeon type loaded to the brim with difficult encounters, top-end loot, and potential progression options for interested players. One of the main enemies, as shown during Valheim’s Frost Caves update public test branch, will be the werewolf-like Fenring creatures, though developers have also announced the presence of cultists, the Ulv, and Stone Golems - among other threats.

According to the developers’ latest blog post, there’s a major new base defense event involving one of the all-new creatures, though players will need to discover the specifics of this event on their own. Curiously, the Frost Caves update is, in fact, the renamed Valheim Cult of the Wolf update, which could be seen in the game’s earliest official roadmaps. The official blog explains that the update ended up getting re-titled along the way, and that the developers are hoping to clear up any potential confusion this way.

Getting into Valheim’s Frost Caves isn’t the only way to experience new content and features in this update, however. Developers have delivered many quality-of-life backend features to the game, too, such as full controller support, performance optimizations, and the ability to pause the game while in single-player. Overall, players should find the Frost Caves update to be a major step forward to Valheim.

With the game’s development now progressing at a seemingly smooth pace, it’s worth remembering the best things that were added to Valheim over the past year or so. As it is, the game is in a great place for future releases and has even been demonstrated to run well on Valve’s upcoming handheld gaming PC, Steam Deck. Players that are already looking forward to the next major Valheim update will be interested in hearing that the theme of the upcoming Mistlands update will be “flora and fauna,” according to developers.

Valheim is available now on PC via Steam’s Early Access program.
