Where to Get Tar in Valheim

Quite simply, Tar can be obtained from the Tar Pits that are found scattered all across the Plains biome in Valheim. The inky-blackness and large-size of these Pits make them quite easy to spot, and the Growth monsters that frequently surround the pools make them even more obvious. Notably, Growths can prove to be a bit nasty in combat, due to their poisonous and debuffing attacks, and fans should take care as they work to dispatch them.

After slaying the foes that are near a Pit, Valheim players will be free to approach it and collect Tar from the globules that are around the perimeter of the pool. This is not the only Tar that can be extracted from a Pit, though, as there are frequently large globules beneath their surfaces. However, fans will need to do a bit of work before they can access these submerged resources, as they will be stuck in the Tar initially.

More specifically, players need to drain the Pit of its Tar, and that can be done by digging a trench with a Pickaxe in Valheim. Indeed, fans can use a trench to force the Tar out of the pool and into another area, and that will give them free access to the globules that were previously unharvestable. Notably, Tar has a tendency to flow downhill, and it is thus recommended that players attempt to dig their trenches on a decline.

To mentoin, Tar and Darkwood are certainly not the only additions in the recent Hearth and Home update, as it contains a variety of new items and even a new tool. That tool is Valheim’s Obliterator, which can be used to destroy objects that are no longer of interest. As is the case with Darkwood, players will need to obtain a new resource to create this construction, though it is quite a bit easier to access than Tar.

Valheim is available now on PC via Steam Early Access.
