Tony Baird, the county's chief criminal deputy attorney, says it was a missed opportunity to teach young people that there are "certain standards" more important than winning basketball games.

He told The Herald Journal of Logan he's expressing his opinion not as a prosecutor, but rather as the father of young boys who look up to college athletes.

Coach Stew Morrill has issued a statement saying the 23-year-old Shaw made a mistake, but it was his first offense and he served his penalty by missing five games.

Shaw was reinstated Friday after pleading guilty to possession of marijuana.
